Abstract

Few doubt that the 21st century will see space tourism departing from the realms of (science) fiction to become an increasingly accessible reality. While there is an ongoing debate about the commercial viability of space tourism and its ethical justifications, a solid framework is still missing. Starting by critically analysing existing constructs of sustainable tourism, this article fills the gap, offering a conceptual model for discussion. It also demonstrates why any framework aimed at making space tourism sustainable must include technology as both its enabling factor and key to the solution.
