Abstract

Short description:Even today, every journey holds a promise: in the course of departure, adventure and homecoming, we encounter the unknown, the foreign, above all freedom from and contrast to the limitations and routines, the well-trodden paths of everyday life. The promise is part of a narrative, the (self-) stylization of the trip and the 'traveler' as well as the "mythical-narrative organization of the travel discourse" (Wolfblatt). This myth became brittle at the latest in the course of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century and is increasingly difficult to reconcile with real travel conditions: the opening up and simultaneous disenchantment of the space, which - fully mapped - is hardly suitable for adventure in the Suitable for unknowns, leaves clear traces. The volume's contributions examine various forms of standardization, Standardization and the canonization of travel in terms of their shape and their discursive validity. The discussion of 'counter-movements' and the search for the non-standard, the 'non-standard', the counter-canon of travel, is also taken into account accordingly. Especially with the (also media) diverse and often hybrid representations of travel, there is a perspective that brings together linguistic and literary studies as well as cultural studies approaches. With contributions by Laura Beck, Franziska Bergmann, Daniela Dora, Daniela Fuhrmann, Andrea Geier, Martin Gerstenbräun, Christof Hamann, Maria Hinzmann, Thomas Homscheid, Jan Mohr, Sascha Prostka, Anna Magdalena Schaupp, Klaus Schenk, Björn Weyand and others. the counter-canon of travel is taken into account accordingly.
