Abstract
On 7 July 2017, four episodes of a gory vampire series titled Castlevania appeared on Netflix with little fanfare. Produced and distributed by Netflix, the four episodes seem to function less as television in a traditional sense, and more as an extended pilot to test audience appetite for further production.

Additional Information: | About the book: It cannot have escaped anyone’s attention that the horror genre has become one of the most popular genres of TV drama, with the global success and fandom surrounding The Walking Dead, Supernatural and Stranger Things. Horror has, of course, always had a truly international reach, and nowhere is this more apparent than on television as explored in this provocative new collection, which looks at series from across the globe and considers how horror manifests in different cultural and broadcast/streaming contexts. Bringing together expertise from established scholars and new voices, Global TV Horror examines historical and contemporary TV horror from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Iran, Japan, Spain, New Zealand, USA, and the UK. This collection expands the discussion of TV horror by offering fresh perspectives, examining new shows, and excavating new cultural histories, rendering what has become so familiar – horror on television – unfamiliar yet again. |
