Abstract

The 2020 lockdowns brought the importance of quality accessible urban greenspaces into focus. This was particularly evident in the increased use of urban towpaths; these form blue-green networks through many cities and saw a doubling of footfall in some areas.

This paper reviews how the recent reimagining of inland waterway corridors as wellbeing assets is influenced by changes in how both public spaces and natural capital are valued in urban developments. Drawing on an ongoing study into changing values, evidence and policy for inland waterways, it examines the interplay between the emerging health agenda, growing evidence on the value of urban nature, and the need to establish new purposes for aging waterways infrastructure.
