Abstract

Water Hammer is an ordinary phenomenon in irrigation
networks, causing damages to pipelines, pipes’ junctions
and equipment, the effects of which can often be immeasurable.
The paper scrutinizes the simulation of several
cases of water hammer phenomenon being implemented
in specific software ‘H’ and relied upon examples
resolved by hand by Tzimopoulos [3]. Comparison between
the results by hand and by the software is conducted, assessing
at the same time the reliability of the software. In
addition to this, further scenarios are applied varying the
pipe roughness parameter and are run for slow and sudden
valve closure, attempting to present the severe impacts of
a water hammer incident and the necessity of taking surge
protection for the pipeline system. The software ‘H’ enables
the user to run different scenarios for transient loadings
in the pipelines as well as to take surge protection for
the irrigation network.
