Abstract

Purpose: Student and qualified nurses often feel under-prepared for their roles in dementia care. A student-academic partnership initiative was developed in which student nurses delivered 'Dementia Friends' sessions to their peers prior to formal taught content. Extra-curricular activities offer student nurses additional opportunities for professional development. The study aimed to explore the experiences of the student nurses and to identify factors that impact on collaborative working. Methodology: In individual and dual interviews, three students were asked about their
experiences of participating in the initiative. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and then analysed using Braun and Clarke's (2006) Thematic Analysis.
Findings: Four themes were identified, 'Commitment to working with people with dementia', 'Difficulties in taking on extra-curricular responsibilities', 'personal development' and 'relationships and collaboration'
Conclusions: Students were motivated by the need to provide high quality dementia care. They identified benefits of collaborative working including development of time management, team-working, leadership, communication and presentation skills. Future projects should take account of student workloads and offer rewards that are congruent with student nurses' values.
