Abstract

The growth in U.S. incarceration rates over the past forty years is "historically unprecedented and internationally unique." Imprisoning approximately 2.3 million adults, America presently has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This situation has drawn attention to the interplay between incarceration and health(care), with prisoners tending to suffer higher rates of disease than the general population, and correctional facilites often being "ill-equipment treatment providers." States are constitutionally required to provide adequate healthcare for prisoners, but delivery can be challenging, especially in large prison systems.
