Abstract

Staff shortages within the NHS and increases in the number of students enrolled on healthcare courses have resulted in challenges in sourcing practice placements. Educators, therefore, need to think differently about how they provide students with placement opportunities. Research has shown the relevance of self-determination therapy in promoting student engagement in healthcare placements that support the development of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. This is likely to enhance students’ intrinsic motivation and professional identity as they develop into autonomous practitioners. This study explored the experience of students in speech and language therapy (SLT) who were engaging in practice placement during the pandemic, when educators were forced to rethink placement education.
