Abstract

This conceptual paper explores the 2016 killer clown event as a symbolic and affective spectacle embedded in the cultural logic of late capitalism. Moving beyond the limitations of moral panic theory, we argue that the clown functions not as a folk devil but as a hyper-normalised figure of commodified fear, circulated, aestheticised, and ritualised through digital media. Drawing on frameworks from cultural criminology, ultra-realism, hauntology, and graze culture, we show how the killer clown embodies a looping cycle of symbolic transgression that displaces structural anxiety into infantilised, nostalgic, consumable horror. Rather than confronting harm, the craze pacifies it, offering playful menace as algorithmic content and packaging dread within affective templates familiar enough to soothe. The clown’s recurrence reveals a culture unable to imagine rupture, where fear becomes spectacle and deviance becomes service. In this light, the killer clown is not a threat to the symbolic order, but a maintenance tool of its survival.
