Abstract

Migrant economic remittances are a critical lifeline for households and a major source of foreign exchange for many African states, including Nigeria. Yet, despite their importance, remittance flows are often shaped by unstable and poorly coordinated policy environments. This article examines how Nigerian diasporas in the United Kingdom navigate frequent changes in Nigeria’s remittance policies and how these shifts influence their choice of remittance channels. Drawing on 30 in-depth interviews with Nigerian diaspora across major UK cities, the study finds that policy volatility, manifested in abrupt regulatory changes such as the Central Bank’s “naira-4-dollar” scheme and shifting exchange-rate directives, undermines trust in formal financial institutions and pushes many migrants toward informal transfer networks and
