This score realizes the orchestration for a movement originally intended for Messiaen’s last completed orchestral work Éclairs sur l’Au-Delà… (1987-91). Messiaen completed the movement in two- and three-stave score with some indications of the intended orchestration, but, at a relatively late stage, decided to omit the movement from the final work. While other pieces by Messiaen have emerged since his death in 1992, thus far, this is the only exemplar of a previously unknown mature orchestral movement to be performed.
The World Premiere performance of the movement was given by the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Nicholas Collon at the BBC Proms on 7th August 2017.
