Abstract

This paper delves into the increasingly significant role elite Mexican law firms play in shaping the legal-political ecosystem of emerging markets through non-market strategies. The study explores how these law firms utilize corporate political activities to access resources, enhance client service capabilities, and navigate the nuances of public policy, while acknowledging the potential pitfalls such as conflicts of interest, violation of anti-corruption laws, and reputational damage. By integrating Resource Dependence Theory and Institutional Theory, the paper examines how these firms navigate complex regulations and gain market advantages. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach of Social Network Analysis, thematic analysis, and in-depth interviews, preliminary findings suggest a strong link between these elite law firms and government officials, indicating potential political influence. Future research will probe deeper into these political connections, the impact of institutional factors on lobbying strategies, and mechanisms of exerting influence on the legal-political environment. The study contributes to understanding the unique challenges and opportunities faced by law firms in emerging markets, providing insights into the role of non-market strategies in shaping legal-political ecosystems and boosting competitiveness.
