Abstract
Doctoral education policies have diversified the doctoral candidate profile, modes of study and types of degrees meaning that universities and supervisors need to respond to diverse candidate needs. A sensitive approach is advocated when responding to diversity, although not all candidates will disclose barriers. Furthermore, not all universities will offer supervisor development including Communities of Practice (CoP) programmes which encourage supervisors to undertake reflection and scholarly activity. The literature is heavily weighted to discussing the barriers for candidates, with only a few items focusing on supervisory strategies and tips. What is missing is an open-access range of scholarly approaches that supervisors have taken in collaboration with the candidate and supervisors, which this paper aims to address.
