Abstract

This document provides the research context to the curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy materials written by the authors (Fautley & Daubney, 2015, 2019; Daubney and Fautley 2014, 2019), and published by the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM). It is by no means necessary to read this document before using the resources, however. The intention of this current document is to show some of the research that went into the production of the materials, and to make visible some of the tacit assumptions that space or utility precluded in the original materials. Whilst there is much that is theoretical and literature-based in this document, nonetheless we hope that it will be of use to those practitioners who wish to delve a little deeper into the current thinking about curriculum and assessment in music education.
