Abstract
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive autosomal recessive inherited disorder caused by defects in a recessive gene, the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). The resulting imbalance in fluids and salts increases the production of thick, sticky mucus and impairs the functioning of the respiratory tract and impacts on digestive system organs (liver, pancreas and intestine) leading to the maldigestion and malabsorption of nutrients. Symptoms impact strongly on eating behaviours and nutritional and weight status which is closely linked to respiratory status. There is a paucity of research on eating experiences and behaviours, the limited evidence available focuses on eating disorders and disordered eating, with no clear conclusions reached. Recent research has explored mindful eating practices in an attempt to gain a fuller understanding of eating behaviours in people with CF and to develop interventions supporting psychological wellbeing alongside improved eating behaviours.
