Abstract

In order to realize full benefit without sacrificing the practicality of such projects, the decision-making process for the construction of residential buildings need to include sustainability principles at each and every level. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the applicability of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and identify the barriers that impede its successful adoption in construction projects to achieve sustainability in construction. Literature data were supplemented by a quantitative procedure involving the distribution of a questionnaire between 107 participants, the majority of whom were employed in the construction industry in Nigeria. Survey results showed that High cost was ranked the first barrier with a mean score of 4.42, followed by security, maintenance, power availability, and inadequate training. The study further deployed Ginni’s mean difference measure of dispersion and revealed that the stationary barrier to adopting RFID technology is lack of demand. The outcomes of this study will give a strong platform for critically comprehending and analyzing the many obstacles that are preventing the widespread use of RFID technology.
