Abstract

This chapter investigates the impressions and realities of work-life balance medical doctors working in public hospitals in Algeria. The study also assesses the barriers to achieving work-life balance among Algerian medical doctors. The study adopts a qualitative study through semi-structured interviews with 63 Algerian medical doctors. The study found several meanings associated with work-life balance, including time for family, time for work, time for religious activities/practices and time for social and recreational activities. In addition, we found three main barriers hindering the achievement of work-life balance among Algerian medical doctors, including availability and accessibility of infrastructure, uncertainty (unpredictability), and tolerance. The chapter concludes by highlighting some implications for policy and practice.
