Abstract
Worldwide, the number of people aged 60 or over is increasing. While this reflects a positive development in public health, it also means that in the future nurses will be required to support the health of increasing numbers of older people. The skin is the largest organ of the body and provides protection for the body’s organs, as well as having a significant role in vital processes such as temperature regulation. However, the ageing process involves degenerative changes such as reduced cell replacement and weakening of the blood vessels. These changes have physical and psychosocial consequences for older people such as increased susceptibility to skin damage and lowered self-esteem. This article details the age-associated changes that affect the skin, investigates skin conditions that can affect older people living in the community and examines the role of the nurse in promoting skin health.
