Abstract

This chapter will offer a personal reflection on my transition from industry into Higher Education. In doing so, I will reflect upon the journey of locating a professional identity that is coherent with my identity as a gay man. The challenges of securing an identity as an openly gay early career lecturer, especially one that teaches around issues of gender and sexuality, are explored within the context of a neoliberal institution that has a highly diverse student population. This environment, with a strong focus on National Student Survey results and the ‘student experience’ can create issues in teaching content relating to gender and sexuality that may appear to be in direct conflict with the personal, social and cultural beliefs of some students. This chapter therefore reflects upon my experiences as an early career teacher trying to navigate the HE sector – actively challenging potentially oppressive belief systems, whilst maintaining a focus on student satisfaction to ensure job security.
