Music theory occupies a crucial position within the artistic persona of André Jolivet, the long-ignored yet highly innovative compatriot and peer of Oliver Messiaen. This book chapter has a two-fold aim: firstly, to collect and synthesise the most important theoretical concepts found across a range of the composer’s writings within his first mature period; secondly, to test such concepts ‘in action’ through detailed analysis of Jolivet’s Cinq danses rituelles (1939). Through this process are revealed complex music practice-theory relationships, as well as interplay between poietic and esthesic approaches to elucidation of the music, both also having wider application beyond Jolivet studies.
