Abstract

Within an orientalist frame of reference, the cosmopolitan metropolis of Shanghai became known as the “Paris of the East” during the first half of the twentieth century. In particular, the 1930s witnessed a boom in periodical production due to a burgeoning middle class, relatively relaxed rules surrounding censorship, and copious printing presses situated in both the former International and French Concessions.
